What Lies Beneath invites artists to explore and interpret the theme through their unique perspectives. What’s behind your art? Certainly, the surface is the first thing the viewer sees. Nevertheless, behind all that is the path you traveled to reach your final manifestation of expression. Perhaps you used many layers of materials or ideas or even both. The theme is meant to be a creativity starter and interpretation is up to you.

Juror Kim Abeles is a highly acclaimed artist whose work delves into themes of biography, geography, feminism, and the environment. With a profound commitment to exploring societal issues and fostering science literacy and civic engagement, Abeles has collaborated with institutions such as the California Science Center, health clinics, and the National Park Service. Her innovative Smog Collectors project, which transformed air pollution into art, garnered international acclaim and was recently showcased at the United Nations Headquarters. Abeles has received prestigious fellowships from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts, the California Community Foundation, and the Pollack-Krasner Foundation. Her work is held in prominent collections including MOCA, LACMA, the Brooklyn Museum, and the California African American Museum.
