Established in 2001, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts (KHN) is a renowned Artist Residency program that supports established and emerging visual artists, writers, composers, and interdisciplinary artists worldwide. Uniquely housed in a residential prairie-style complex, KHN awards up to 78 residency awards per year and hosts 5 residents at any time. Residency awards are 2-8 weeks in length and include a weekly $175 stipend. In addition, residents receive their own private bedroom, bathroom, and studio.
Inspired by the prairie architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, architect Burkett Graf created an elegant design making the building itself an artistic expression of graceful living. With broad overhangs to shelter windows and enclosed courtyards from harsh weather, southern exposures to spacious bedrooms and living rooms, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center offers resident artists exceptional vintage space to live and work in. Essential amenities, such as shops, diners, and pharmacy, are within walking distance, and KHN maintains three bicycles for residents' use. For those bringing cars, off-street parking is provided. The building also houses a gallery featuring exhibitions.
