Residency at SSW is experimental, collective and supported by SSW’s skilled team and we have written a little about what to expect from residency at SSW over on our residencies page.

The combination of access to facilities and workshops supported by technical support with peer exchange and learning is unique and offers lots of possibilities in the development of artists practice. With this, the programme is particularly suited to artists who;

- want to test out new ideas or directions in their work
- are interested in connecting with materials and processes in our workshops
- are seeking connection with other artists
- value open-ended and experimental approaches to making

Throughout the residency the SSW team facilitates a loose structure of optional group activity, including studio sharings, meals, walks, saunas and workshops, to build connection and conversation between the group.

With our workshops in transition over 2024 we offer the following facilities and processes during each residency month:

February – During this month our programme will focus on the ceramics and clay workshops with access to plaster and slip casting. This will be supported by introductions to various outdoor firings which may include: raku, wood firing and smoke firing techniques.

August and September – During these months, alongside our ceramics workshop outlined above, we will support access to blacksmithing, metal work and stone work. Inductions to these processes will be available during these months.

Residency is led by the selected artists practice and you do not need to work with all of these processes and no experience is necessary.
