MERZ was founded on extending the legacies of Kurt Schwitters and Hannah Hoch, developing ideas of ‘collage’ in a metaphorical way as a theme for reconstruction and fabrication in a post-industrial and rural setting.

Providing two gallery/performance spaces, a variety of studios, and several lodging options, the MERZ residency programme combines workshop, exhibition space, and videography for marketing, establishing an innovative all-encompassing opportunity for artists, sculptors, ceramicists, architectural model-makers, and puppet-makers interested in making new from old, repurposing, reconstructing and fabricating from salvaged, forgotten or overlooked materials, and valuing historical connectedness.

MERZ was established in 2012 by TV producer and artist David Rushton as a gallery, offering artists the unique opportunity for both exhibition and documentation for their own broadcast and social media. Past artists have included Charles Jenks, Daniel Libeskind, and Rachel Libeskind.

In 2018 the MERZ residency program was initiated to support artists of all disciplines. In 2019 the MERZ Museum of Model Art (MoMA) opened. MoMA supports residencies and exhibitions of artists and story-tellers who make models and puppet theatres representing counterfactual conditionals (or the philosophy of 'as if') that explore alternative futures to the cultural norm as social or architectural critique. The MoMA residency can additionally appeal to architects, designers, and imaginative thinkers.

With its own production company, Summerhall TV, MERZ offers professional documentation of artists and their residencies for marketing circulation. The films are available to support artists’ social media exposure and can feature on our well established sites like www.summerhall.tv and www.merz.gallery. With Summerhall TV, MERZ reaches a virtual as well as a physical audience for work and development.

A former coal mining town, Sanquhar housed the former Buccleuch Terracotta Works with a rich history from 1688 to 1960. At its height, high-class facing and engineering bricks were produced as well as nearly 200 other clay products. Over 20 acres of rich clay deposits remain, filling adjacent fields and providing a rich local resource to hardy ceramicists for residency use.

Sanquhar is a small Scottish town located in the scenic Nith valley of the Dumfries and Galloway region in South West Scotland. Sanquhar bares witness to the passing of time with its many castle and farming estate ruins carrying a rich history in the arts, being revered by famous Scottish poets, artists, and craftspeople. Strong traditions in textile weaving, knitting, and clay can be seen throughout the town. Sanquhar has become a centre for walking, cycling and story-telling, is home to the oldest post-office in the world, and plays host to three annual arts festivals.

Residencies are typically four to eight weeks in duration with a two week minimum and no maximum stay.

Prices range from £840 - £1240 depending on accommodation choice.

All MERZ residency buildings are self-contained with showers and kitchen facilities.
