EXHIBITION THEME

Transience. We are inviting images that evoke and relay the concept of transience - references that relate to change or the process of changing.

COMPETITION DESCRIPTION AND CRITERIA

Galerie Huit Open Salon 2011 is an open International Photographic Competition designed to showcase cutting-edge contemporary and emerging photography from around the world and promote new work by talented artists, enabling them to exhibit and receive exposure during the renowned international Photography Festival ‘Les Rencontres d’Arles’ in Southern France.

Images are submitted digitally via the website. The competition theme for 2011 is ‘Transience’ and applicants – who can be at any stage of their career - will be judged on creativity, conceptual strength and technical skill.

Selected artists and their winning images will have their work printed and showcased in a prestigious international gallery, Galerie Huit Arles, during and alongside ‘Les Rencontres d’Arles”. (4th July – 18th September).

Founded in 1970, this unique Festival attracts prominent collectors, curators, gallerists, publishers and photography buffs. In 2010 attendees were estimated at 73,000, including over 5,000 journalists.

The overall winner of the competition will be offered a one-month Artist in Residence, with accommodation in the beautiful, centrally located gallery building. Much more than just an art space, Galerie Huit is a creative, inspirational and convivial venue in a magnificent location. Galerie Huit Arles is situated in a late 17th century mansion, in the historical centre of town.

The scale of the mansion provides rich and varied exhibition spaces, ranging from an intimate 18th century salon with gilded panelling to an ancient cellar, whitewashed for a contemporary feel.

As well as a dynamic exhibition programme, regularly featured in the regional, national and international press, and distinguished private views, the gallery hosts residencies and workshops for artists and writers.

In addition, the final selection of the Galerie Huit Open Salon 2011 will travel from Arles to Southeast Asia to be exhibited in Galerie Huit’s Malaysian gallery space - Galerie Huit Penang - in January 2012.
