Ecological Burial (Promession) is a new burial concept based on a cautious and careful freeze-drying of the dead body, enabling our remains to become soil within a couple of years. In an ecological process, the body of the dead person is frozen using what is known as cryo-technology. The body is placed in a casket and cooled. The temperature is reduced further using liquid nitrogen, which makes the body brittle making it turn to dust with vibration. The dust is dried and any metals such as dental amalgam is seperated out. The dried dust is placed in a biodegradable casket and buried in the biodegradable casket at a depth of about half a metre where there is available air, moist and biodegraders who will turn the body and casket into loam within a year. Promession is developed by Swedish biologist, Susanne Wiigh-Mäsak, and is managed within the framework of Promessa Organic AB. The technology is currently in its final development phase and is expected to be implemented in 2010.
