Call-For-Entries: DEADPAN (the art of the expressionless)
Whitdel Arts is currently accepting submissions for DEADPAN (the art of the expressionless). This exhibition is concerned with humor, although it may not appear that way on the surface. The term deadpan has its origins in 1920’s American culture, when the word pan was slang for “face.” Deadpan therefore was a means to describe an emotionless face. Its contemporary usage has come to define a particular form of comedy in which the method of delivery is straight without letting the viewer in on the joke. This becomes a bit of an intellectual exercise, as the viewer must breach the façade and find the space where the humor lay. In order to achieve a state of deadpan expression, one must actually be expressionless. The opposite of exaggeration, this involves a great deal of restraint as emotions are downplayed to the point of being kept under lock and key.
DEADPAN aims to collect work by visual makers/thinkers across a spectrum of media that confronts viewers using this method of delivery to project dry humor with the intention of leading an audience into a zone of thoughtful discomfort. This can touch upon what is known as “anti-humor” or “humorless humor” in that the joke can be so dry, and delivered with such a straight face that it is missed. Such as exercise can be characterized as a contradiction of the fundamental goals of humor, but in actuality cuts closer to the subjective nature of humor as it manifests in life without the artifice of performance strategies.
