Description of Residency
aspirus (əˈspī(ə)rus)
1 to breathe (from Latin ad “to” + aspirare “breathe”)
2 to direct one’s hopes or ambitions toward achieving something
Aspirus is a new series of artists residencies at ArtFunkl that mingles the notion of providing a moment to breathe, with the desire to further artistic ambitions. The aim is to offer artists who take part a dedicated time of re-focusing and re-creation. Artists will have a period of being detached from their quotidian existence in order to contemplate and regenerate their Art practice.
Running in parallel with the above, is the effect caused by the influences of a divergent environment. Moving from a habitual environment to live and work in an alternative one brings new energies and stimuli, often provoking responses which are unexpected, and can be revealing, unlocking layers of practice which have been simmering beneath the surface. The Aspirus residencies, which run for 6 weeks, are an opportunity to experiment with how work emerges when basic lifestyle changes impact on internal and external processes of development.
The environment of Manchester varies from vibrant activity (Music, Art, Social), to peaceful living areas through a cross section of the city. ArtFunkl is situated in a quiet, residential part near to the city centre, and is therefore in the ideal location for providing both retreat and connection. Artists taking part in the Aspirus residencies will have the facility to tailor their residency with degrees of each, to suit their own requirements.
