Owen Chapman (QC) and Peter Sinclair (FR/UK) - Presentation

In the framework of the European project Future DiverCities, and more specifically in the context of a collaboration between France and Quebec, Seconde Nature and LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE have invited a Quebec artist and a French artist to develop their artistic practices around urban mobility and the use of data. The first part of the residency will be held in LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE from November 6 to December 16, 2017. The public is invited for a presentation of the project on December 14 at 5pm. The two artists chosen for this exchange, Owen Chapman and Peter Sinclair, will work on a 3D virtual world available on the Web dedicated to experimentation and the practice of sound creation in urban space. During their residencies, the artists wish to create a device whose form is modifiable according to the situation and the variation of data. This approach aims to incorporate participatory dimensions at different scales that have the potential to evolve with the project. In a co-creation process, the residency periods involve different audiences, amateurs and professionals, who will participate in this creation. French and Quebec companies working in the field of mobility, software development and data visualization will work with the artists to bring useful data, technical expertise, ideas and inclinations to the work. This co-creation will also take shape during moments of collective innovation with students, professors and researchers. This participative project is supported by the European Commission's European Creative Program, the Conseil Régional Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur, the Ministère des affaires étrangères, the Ministère de la Culture, the Conseil Départemental des Bouches du Rhône, the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, the Conseil des Arts du Canada, the Aix-en-Provence City, the Québec City and Aix Marseille Provence Métropole. Owen Chapman As a musician, composer of electronic music and sound artist, Owen Chapman uses a combination of digital and analog technologies to make live audiovisual remixes. A professor in the Department of Communication Studies, he is also co-director of the Participatory Media Cluster within the Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology at Concordia University (Montreal). Peter Sinclair Sound artist and researcher in audio art, Peter Sinclair began his career by building musical machines that he presented in exhibitions and performances, alone or in collaboration with musicians. He adopts software programming as a creative tool while maintaining in his projects a strong relation to "physical" space. Responsible for research at Locus Sonus (ESAAix), much of his artistic work is carried out as a team or involves other artists and researchers.
