East Midlands Graduate Project: EM19: Call for Submissions

Surface Gallery is now accepting submissions for our eleventh East Midlands Graduate Project: EM19: Nottingham’s only graduate residency. This opportunity supports Fine Art graduates from across the region by offering a free residency and exhibition in an independent contemporary art space to kick-start the transition from university to professional art world.

Eight artists will be selected to produce a new body of work for the subsequent exhibition. The residency will take place in our open-plan Project Space, enabling the artists to interact and develop their practice in a stimulating and mutually supportive environment. There will be in-house critical feedback, and several opportunities for formal critique sessions with established artists and curators, including internationally acclaimed artist Wolfgang Buttress.

The residency will culminate in a two-week exhibition in the Main Gallery. The artists will work with our Project Team, and will be encouraged to participate in all aspects of event management, such as flyer design and copywriting. The final stage in this collective project will see the artists bring together their diverse creative practices in the curation of their exhibition. Successful candidates will also plan and lead their own workshops on each Saturday of the residency when there will be an open studios event.

Following the shortlisting process, candidates will be invited for interview. We will be looking for artists whose work is already strong and ambitious, and demonstrates the potential for continued development. EM19 is open to practitioners of all disciplines, and applications are welcome from all recent BA and MA Fine Art graduates from East Midlands universities, and graduates now resident in the region who studied elsewhere.

Resident artists will have twenty-four hour access during the four-week residency, wifi access, and use of the kitchen area.
