3-month residency for Non-Portuguese artists from the Visual Arts (single artists or artist duos) at CSL - Carpintarias de São Lázaro, a new cultural center in Lisbon, Portugal.

This AiR has the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. This grant will be designated as “Bolsa Gulbenkian / Carpintarias de São Lázaro”.

Goals of the AiR Carpintarias 2018:

1. The artists should propose dialogues between the centre CSL and its surroundings, be it the space of its physical surroundings, or of identity or memory; be it the multicultural reality of the communities present in the neighbourhood.

2. Artists should also reflect on society as a multi-cultural organism, as well as on new forms of sustainability in the life of our contemporary society that is concentrating more and more in growing city areas.

3. The AiR has to result in a public presentation of the work and research realized at CSL.

FRAMEWORK: Carpintarias de São Lázaro is a cultural center, directed by the ARCCSL (Cultural Association Associação Recreativa e Cultural das Carpintarias de São Lázaro), founded in 2014. The cultural centre will be a new hub for creativity and the crossing over of the different art fields in Lisbon. Located in the historical city center between Martim Moniz square and Campo dos Mártires da Pátria square, the aim is to create a new opportunity for the creation and presentation of receiving and developing various artistic competences with relevant meaning, in the support and dissemination of contemporary as well as traditional culture.

Lisbon’s art scene has been strongly pulsing during the last decade, more and more international artists and art professionals are coming to live and work in the Portuguese capital, with its strong connections to the Portuguese speaking world, and the ongoing connections to Africa, Brazil, China or India are evidence of the clear multicultural influences and references of Portuguese culture. Thus, this artistic residency is open to non-Portuguese artists, and aims to foster artistic creation within the context of national and international culture. The program is hosted by the Fine Arts Department / Carpintarias de São Lázaro, and will be realized within the center and with a close relation to the nearest neighborhoods of the art center and with inclusion of the local multicultural community (or by directly involving them in the creative process or by organizing workshops, presentations, etc.). Important for this residency, is to reflect not only on society as a multicultural organism, but also on the values of sustainability and how to improve our life in the city.
