Central Park Pavilion / extension American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, situated in Central Park along 5th Avenue, embodies a double-paradox in its urban encounter with the surrounding park: Central Park, as one of the most celebrated urban features of New York City, is wholly neglected by the architectural layout and circulation of the museum, in fact it literally turns its back on the park. Furthermore, the largest collection of American design and other Americana, collected and displayed in the American wing in the Metropolitan Museum, fails to take note of one of the most important artifacts right in front of its doorsteps.  The proposed intervention links the American Wing with Central Park through two independent but interlocking pavilions, one accessible from the park, and one accessible from the upper floor of the museum.
