INC (Institute of New Cartography)_Experimental Map 01 / Berlin
GlogauAIR. Artists in Residence Programme Glogauerstr., 16 10999 Berlin – Germany OPEN STUDIOS 24 / 25 September 2010 INC (Institute of New Cartography) is the name of the project that Pedro Guirao started and developed in Berlin. The main aim of this fictional institution is to find new ways of mapping the world around, using procedures based on the self experience. The artist becomes a cartographer who explores the city taking any kind of references which will be interpreted and used into the map. The nature of the INC’s experimental maps is directly induced by the relation between artist and space at a specific time. The final map is not an orientation tool, but a new territory added to the city where to get lost. The method of collecting the information necessary for building the map is based mainly on walking. First days: to recognize the studio by walking up and down, writing down observations on the travelled line on the floor, marking the holes that already were on the walls. Next: to walk outside of the building, just through the surroundings, emulating the up and down walking indoor. Lately, the walks started to be longer, further, more complex. The studio’s floor and walls became then surfaces where to draw the memory traces of the outdoor walking experience. One and a half months of work: clean up the room. Then a period of spatial interventions on the studio started, trying to find out how to link the several experiences and materials taken from the city into one, the final result, the first experimental map of the INC: Berlin. We don’t see the city as it is, we see the city as we are. So to make a map is close to making a portrait of someone else or a landscape that, after all, is nothing but a self-portrait.
