ABOUT URBAN SPACE 2008
URBAN SPACE is a photographic traveling exhibition open to international artists.

Focusing on the aesthetics of large urban centers as a theme, URBAN SPACE curates works of photography, performance and interventions and is exhibited as a projected slideshow at selected festivals and galleries around the world.

The first edition of URBAN SPACE - a projection of 530 images from over 23 countries - was first premiered at the renowned media arts foundation Oi Futuro in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in July 2007. The show has since travel to be screened at several exhibitions and festivals worldwide, including: ECCO during Brasilia's FotoArte, Sao Paulo's Galeria Vermelho, the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural Center in New York, as well as showings at the Fotopub07 festival in Slovenia.

Future screenings are scheduled for Lisbon, Porto, New York City, Chicago, Montreal, Buenos Aires and Caracas.

The 2008 edition of URBAN SPACE is curated around the theme of “URBAN COMMUNITIES” and looks to examine the diverse formation of local communities, informal situations and other site-specific representations of contemporary urban existence. Anonymity. Survival. Decadence. Defiance.

Works may include photographic documentation of performances and site specific actions, digital interventions as well as traditional still photography.

I would like to submit work for the Urban Space 2008 project as well. However, I find various deadlines listed on Wooloo.org. Is the deadline April 1st, April 20th or May 1st?

I don't want to miss it!

Hola Luana,

Just talked to the URBAN SPACE curators and the selection process have already gone into final stage as the project has been closed for submissions for a while. So I think it would be a shame to spend time on.
However, I can tell you that we are currently planning another screening of the New Life Visuals in the end of June.
More details soon.

Hello,

I received an e-mail from wooloo telling I had got an honorable mention in urbanspace 2008. Therefore, three photos of mine would be projected. But the project I submitted was composed by only one photograph.

How is this going to be done? I will be in the honor roll with one photo or should I send more? What is the real difference between official selection and honor roll?

Thank you very much,

Bernardo Schorr

GOLD CONSTRUCTION SHOW
BY BERNARDO LEITãO GAEIRAS
This project turns the under construction sites, which tend to be inconvenient for most citizens, into something attractive and enjoyable as a show. Because of all the planning process and anticipation, certain sites are gold-prized and subverted into a pleasant reward for the city and its citizens. With the usage of an electronic billboard, the site can transmit all the technical information about the project under construction, and frame the citizens eyes to what really matters. This way, I can also trigger more people and officialize all the "voyeurs".

BALANCE STUDIES
BY MICHAEL FLEMING
"Spatial Interventions" is a series of collaborative video and performance projects between me and my twin brother Alan. Through the investigation of architecture and space we attempt to create works which question a bodies relationship to the urban environment. The gestures and actions which take place in these spaces reference alternative uses of the body in space such as parkour, skateboarding and gymnastics. Through the subversive re-appropriation of space by our bodies we hope to break down existing social structures and illustrate the freedom of movement in the urban landscape.

PAUL'S ROOM
BY MARGARIDA CORREIA
This recent body of work is an exploration of the family home of my friend Paul de Jong. By photographing the interior spaces in Rotterdam where he grew up, as well as re-photographing sections of their family photo albums, I examine the topics of family heritage and history through a personal and emotive eye. Although the interior spaces are densely decorated, I focus my lens on those meaningful or symbolic objects that present clues regarding the lives of the families who treasure them. These photographs portray an European reality populated by the craft and art of old world Modernity.

UNURBIA 2
BY ALEX HILL
unurbia :
space or place that differentiates itself from organic urbanity as it promotes homogeneity, control, and suppression in the public realm.

A series of images that document an emerging confused landscape that results in an infusion of public and private space. Continuing from my project entitled 'mall', unurbia will break free of the confines of interior space exploring the landscape as a construction of a place that is unurbia.

Initial locations include uniform housing developments, public/private space and landscapes designated for consumption.

A STRANGE FEELING OF EMPTINESS
BY JOãO COUTO C.
Looking to what I was told is the Reality... I get a bit lost. In a way it seems very real the way we live as a society, but in another, seems so far and so abstract that it gives the feeling of emptiness... so, What is the real? What we accept as real? Are the feelings that we have as a result of this "reality" real?
As you look to an urban landscape you can see people living their reality, going to work, buying stuff, running and driving stressfully, building to sell more, etc. But looking, not using any idea of judgment, we have empty strange places that represent a strange way of life.
