"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed." -Albert Einstein
Born in Australia to immigrant Italian parents, my practice as a contemporary visual artist is heavily influenced by my Italian heritage and is the driving source of inspiration. Within it I explore contemporary experiences as a young Australian woman with an imported traditional culture, dealing with issues of the intergration of two cultures. My work is the result of an autobiographical execution of the construction of identity through family relationships and the passing on of cultural heritage and traditions within the context of an adopted home land.
Childhood fantasies, familial relationships, the everyday and the construction of identity through cultural heritage are ongoing themes within my work. I employ filmic and art-historical video and performance references and actual and real-time video recordings (like my family at mealtimes) to explore these themes. I also often document and draw from the existing architectural surroundings of a space and combine these elements with performative video components to create sensorial installations.
By observing and incorporating these interiors and deconstructing linear ideas of time and space I aim to subvert conventional notions of video. Through the understanding of spatial proportions and harmonics, my work often seeks to create a strongly disorientating space that becomes unsettling or demands the physical participation of the viewer. The result is an energetic and sculptural redefinition of the moving image based around a fairytale place of deceptively childish charm and logic where ideas are literally translated into reality.
My practice to date has incoporated static sculptural installations using objects, such as a miniature dining table with a singular video component, to investigate these ideas. The combination of video and sculpture and playing with perspective and the proportions between the viewer and the work are continued themes within my work.
