About
The work I produce is a blend of doodles, collage, automatic writing, and obsessive drawing.I am interested in the way these elements work together to form self-portraits of the mind, or mind maps, through either conscious or unconscious decisions. By using collage to incorporate images from fashion, cinema, popular culture and the animal kingdom, I interweave my own inner world with the outside world. The words and sentences I write depend on the mood I am in, and are mostly lyrics from songs I have in my head. They always connect to what is going on inside or around me and ,more often than not, refer to my emotional state. Each drawing is led by its own rule. Nothing is planned or predictable. Everything is a succession of chances, free association, mistakes and impulsions, yet there is a certain level of control is the execution.I use very fine pilot pens on MDF sheets which are unprimed so that the pen, on this raw surface, works almost the same way as a tattoo needle does on one\'s skin: the ink doesn\'t flow easily onto the grain. As I go along, I incorporate images that I feel could provide a narrative or which all share a certain quality or theme. The drawing stops when I am satisfied with its shape, which is then cut out. Drawing and doodling is for me a way to channel dark, negative emotions, as well as anxiety; an anxiety that is due to perfectionism, which is seen in the meticulous, labour-intensive nature of the work. The words and sentences are never straight-forward. They can be ironic, cynical, sarcastic or completely honest. There is therefore a fine contrast between the aesthetically pleasant and attractive quality of the drawing, and the harsh, gloomy, angry statements of the text. It all works together to form a cluster of information, that is not just representative of myself but of how I make sense of and cope with living in London, contemporary society and mass media.
