Location: Greifswalder Str. 220
10405 Berlin / Prenzlauer Berg
/Tram M4

FINAL Performance:

Sunday, June 15th
Location: Friedrichstr. 112

/ U-Oranienburger Tor

Musically, the project stems from the tradition developed by Cornelius Cardew and the scratch orchestra, of performing pieces of music by non-musicians. It is used here as a device for integrating the public into the opera as participants, and as a descriptive tool for creating a collective artwork and producing new forms of knowledge.

The over-all framework of the project goes back to the cycle of low intensity conflicts, initiated by the artist in 2000. This cycle consists of books, slides-shows, and installations. A part of this cycle is a mini-opera for non-musicians, for which POWELL OPERA is the overture. Every sequence of this mini-opera aims to describe one aspect of the low intensity conflict. The musical composition, without being judgmental, conveys the main logical elements of Powell’s performance. In fact, the POWELL OPERA uses as its libretto fragments of the speech that Colin Powell delivered at the United Nations in February 2003 to prove that Iraq was in possession of weapons of mass destruction...

The first rehearsal will take place on Wednesday, June 11th at 7 PM in Greifswalder Str. 220 / 10405 Berlin / Prenzlauer Berg / Tram M4

This will be followed by one or two more rehearsals before the final performance on Sunday, June 15th at 5 PM in Friedrichstr. 112/ 10117 Berlin / Mitte / U-Oranienburger Tor

The full length of the opera is about 26 minutes.
