We would like to inform you about the launch of the international art competition “Takeda. ART/HELP. The Rule of the Exception” for students at art schools and universities. An exhibition of the winning entries will take place in Moscow from 28 February to 10 March 2020.

This competition inaugurated by the Takeda Pharmaceutical Company is both a social and a cultural one. Its objectives are to discover the most gifted students at art schools and universities and also to call the public’s attention to the importance of advancing diagnostics and treatment of rare diseases and developing new medical technology.

The project’s curator is art critic Sergei Khachaturov, who describes the basic idea of the competition this way:

People often use the catch phrase, “The exception proves the rule.” But that is not at all true when applied to human society. Every person is an exception. People are all unique and need to be approached as individuals, not in some generalized “correct” way. In that sense this is the great humanitarian message of civilization. Caring for each individual, special person is an obligation and a duty.

The Rule of the Exception theme will be taken up by artists of the younger generation in a competition held by the Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, which specializes in developing treatments for patients with rare illnesses. This effort brings the realms of humanitarian science and art closer together. All artists naturally break away from rules, stereotypes and dogmas. Their being exceptional opens up new paths for development and communication.

The works submitted to the competition are to represent the artist’s interpretation of that theme using any style from figurative painting to abstraction. The competition will accept painted canvases, drawings, watercolours or gouache on paper, and also graphic prints. Their dimensions are not to exceed one metre.

Applications for the Competition must be submitted https://goo.gl/F5EieR " target="_blank">online from 18 November 2019 through 18 January 2020, inclusive. Applications must include information about the artist (a photograph and brief biography), a brief annotation about the work, and an electronic image (1,200 x 1,800 pixels). Any question about how to complete the application may be directed to: arthelp@inbox.ru.

The seven winning artists of the “Takeda. ART/HELP. The Rule of the Exception” competition will receive prizes from the organisers as well as a special prize from the Takeda Pharmaceutical Company. Seven contestants will be brought to Moscow to attend the opening of the exhibition of the finalists. The award ceremony will be held in Moscow on 29 February 2020. The exhibition will feature the fifty artworks that best exemplify the competition’s theme and demonstrate artistic proficiency.
