Public Space One’s gallery program is a venue for innovative, experimental, and challenging contemporary art embedded in a multidisciplinary, accessible, and community-driven space in Iowa City, IA. We encourage incoming artists/curators to activate the space by holding events such as screenings, artist talks, performances, or workshops.
While all proposals will be seriously considered, highest priority is generally given to those that go beyond art-on-the-wall and fully uses the uniqueness of our space and offerings.
Our gallery recently moved to a historic (120-year-old) home at 229 N. Gilbert St. in Iowa City's Northside neighborhood. This new space features a two-room first floor gallery with large windows as well as auxiliary space--including, but not limited to: stairwell, upstairs hallway, front porch, and yard --that we would love to activate. Proposals for these spaces may function separately or in conjunction with the main gallery space, temporarily or potentially longer-term (an experimental garden, for instance).
In other words, we envision the entire property as having potential to be reinterpreted and energized in inventive ways. We also sometimes program satellite spaces and produce public art projects, so are open to proposals that go beyond our space.
