Nelimarkka Museum, the Regional Art Museum of Southern Ostrobothnia, Finland, was founded in 1964 by artist-professor Eero Nelimarkka. Its main focus is on art education, but the museum is also responsible for research of Ostrobothnian art and has hosted an artist-in-residency program since 1980's. The Residency carries out Eero Nelimarkka’s long-term dream of establishing an art school. Circa 10 artists live and work at the residency annually.
The residency is located in a rural setting, four kilometres from Alajärvi Centre, close to a lake and natural surroundings. There are two housing facilities at the Nelimarkka residency:Villa Nelimarkka (2 bedrooms, 2 studios) situated 400m from the museum and The Villa Väinölä (2 bedrooms, one studio), situated at the Alajärvi city centre.
Besides the atmospheric environment, a residency includes the use of the studios, a shared kitchen and bathroom, laundry room and a private bedroom. Both houses have internet access, kitchen utensils, bedding, towels and linens. The museum offers a workshop to the museum’s customers together with the artist(s)-in-residence. Additionally artists are welcome to hold their own exhibition on the museum premises (indoors/outdoors as preferred by artist) during their stay.
