Every year, new buildings and structures in and around Weimar are chosen to become a part of the competition and festival. It is the aim of Genius Loci Weimar to draw attention to the spirit of the location with respect to the history, architecture and other visible and invisible layers of meaning, and to bring these to life using the innovative techniques of the media art of video mapping.
One artist or artist team is chosen as the winner for each location. Thereby, the requirements are not always easy, but each winner can look forward to 15,000 euros prize money, kudos and a fantastic show!
In 2019, Genius Loci Weimar will be dedicated to two particularly noteworthy anniversaries: the centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus and the centenary of the Weimar Constitution, the first parliamentary-democratic constitution on German soil.
Both of these events were epoch-making in their own way and they remain as unforgotten as they are tangible in everyday life. The Weimar Constitution’s concrete and explicit commitment to inalienable fundamental rights such as gender equality was decades ahead of its time, a fact that is underlined by the prevalence and topicality of these issues still today. The same is true of the Bauhaus, which used its visionary power to turn a simple manifestation into a set of creative principles, against a background of revolutionary and disruptive media that ultimately served to reinforce their validity.

GENIUS LOCI WEIMAR IS LOOKING FOR INNOVATIVE IDEAS
FOR THE FACADE PROJECTION FESTIVAL ON 9TH TO 11TH AUGUST 2019.
Applicants have until the 07th of April to apply with a 30 sec video clip outlining
the central design concept for the projection of one of the following locations: Deutsches Nationaltheater (DNT), Mon Ami and the new Bauhaus-Museum.
For the second time, the competition will address not only video mapping performance art but also the emerging topic of media architecture installations in historical context.
The three winning artists will be awarded prize money totaling € 45,000 for the
realisation of a 05–10 min high-resolution audio-visual production, to be
presented during the festival as a video mapping on the respective facade, using
the newest Christie projectors, provided by publitec.
THE MOST IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS FOR
THE GENIUS LOCI WEIMAR COMPETITION ARE:
• Innovative design in the form of an audio-visual video mapping, with particular
observance paid to the Genius Loci.
• Individual, original and sophisticated handling of the spirit of the location with
respect to the history and architecture etc.
• The deliberate omission of erratic gimmickry & showmanship, intrusive clichés,
and careless historical retelling.
• Moreover, to enable all participants to create the best possible results, we
are offering all registered participants a full license for the MXWendler Stage Designer video mapping software.
