MIND BODY

January 1 – 31, 2019 at Hotel Yorba 4020 W Lafayette Blvd, Detroit, MI 48209

An exhibition about self-care; from its origins in political and social activist circles through its co-option in the present neoliberal capitalist system. The exhibition seeks to explore the paradoxical nature of self-care while simultaneously examining how technology has been presented as a solution for therapy while also being a root-cause of contemporary isolation.

Given the unsustainable nature of our capitalist system, from an environmental and social perspective, this exhibition examines structure that is fundamentally making us ill—meanwhile purporting to provide the cure. Through video and socially engaged performance, the show MIND BODY will remind us that a collective healing and real self-care with a reverence and urgency for structural change, is what we need.

Using the hotel room as a vessel for an exhibition asks the viewers to become more engaged with the work in a non-traditional setting. Tenants of the hotel are encouraged to view the work and to get involved in the conversation.
