LIVABLE PLANET? From the local to the planetary, artists respond to global change from their own backyard.

Call for Art

In the wake of weekly weather related disasters, engineering and scientific innovations, Chico Art Center and Butte Environmental Council seek artwork that responds to local, national and global issues. Mt. Shasta’s aquifer systems, bottling headwaters, river protection, threatened and endangered trout and salmon populations, the proposed Delta Tunnel, fracking, urban sprawls on environmentally sensitive lands, junk in space, dismantling of the EPA, The Paris Accord, climate change, are among many of the subject matter appropriate for this exhibition. We are looking for visual examinations of our changing ecology, systems and borders.

This is a juried exhibition with all media considered, including but not limited to painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, cartoon, multimedia, photography (including aerial), video, animation, virtual and augmented reality, sound art, and sculpture. What causes you to depict your surroundings the way you do? We want to know!

Artists such as Banksy, Ai Weiwei, Andy Goldsworthy, Kim Abeles, Richard T. Walker, Amy Balkin, Olafur Eliasson, Binh Danh, Hamish Fulton, Fritz Haeg, and Nina Katchadourian, among many others question the causes and effects of our planet. Social and environmental commentary peppers our animated entertainment such as the Pixar film, Wall E, or the Netflix series, Bordertown.  This exhibition is a context for consideration of the causes and effects of our region, continent and planet.
