Reflection: Contemporary Portraiture Exhibition

Call for Submissions

At Surface Gallery this spring, artists are invited to explore ‘what is portraiture today?’

Portraits have always been more than just a record. They have been used to display the power, beauty, or other less tangible qualities of the subject. From cave paintings to modern photography, portraiture has been rejuvenated by new mediums throughout history. This process has continued into the 21st century, as we see how portraiture has been transformed in a world of prominent and diversified visual culture dominated by modern technology.

All submissions will be considered. Any genre, subject or approach is welcome. Self-portraits and artworks that explore the artist-sitter relationship are admissible, as Nadar once said; ‘The portrait I do best is of the person I know best.’ Alongside artworks on paper and canvas, submissions that explore different mediums, including sculpture, sound and moving image are encouraged. We are looking for innovative and critically informed work, as well as technical skill. The show will be held in Surface Gallery’s main exhibition space.

Prize:
One exhibitor will be awarded a show in Surface Gallery’s main exhibition space. This will be an opportunity for the selected artist to showcase new work in a contemporary art gallery. A selection panel will choose the winner of the prize.

Deadline for submissions: Midnight Friday 16th March 2018

Application packs can be downloaded from surfacegallery.org/opportunities/ or paper copies can be picked up from the gallery during opening hours.

Each artist can submit one portrait for £10, three for £15 and six for £25.

Successful artists for this juried open will be notified by Monday 19th March 2018.

Exhibition Dates: 14th April – 28th April 2018
