Assistant Professor, Time Arts, School of Art and Design

The School of Art and Design at Northern Illinois University invites applications for one tenure-track position in the area of Time Arts, at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning Fall 2018. The job posting is located at: https://employment.niu.edu/postings/30967

Northern Illinois University, located 65 miles west from Chicago, is a comprehensive teaching and research-based institution with over 19,000 currently enrolled students.

The Time Arts program at NIU integrates current and emerging digital media processes, with course work comprising areas of animation, video art, audio art, and interactive art.

The candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses that emphasize animation and digital media.

Minimum Qualifications

A terminal degree (M.F.A. or Ph.D.) in Visual Arts, design, media art or related fields from an accredited (recognized equivalent) university completed by June 30th, 2018.

Two years teaching experience in art, design, or related fields at the university level.

Demonstration of ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, creative and scholarly activities, teaching, advising and service.

Knowledge of 2D and 3D modeling and animation software (3D Studio Max or Maya, ZBrush), game engine (Unity or Unreal) and computer/video hardware.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications

Effective teaching of Time Arts courses, from entry level to graduate level.

An expert user and instructor of applicable software and digital technologies that is engaged with current trends and grounded in the contemporary concepts, principles and art-making practices.

Capability of managing and supervising computer and digital fabrication facilities.

Effectiveness as a mentor and advisor of students.

Relevant industry experience outside of academia.

Record of active participation in professional organizations.

Experience in teaching media-centric foundational level art and design courses.

A cover letter that describes the candidate's teaching, research experience, and interests that address the duties and qualifications as articulated in the position description.

A curriculum vitae comprised of at least those elements specified in the application form and including names, titles, addresses, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers of at least five individuals who can speak to the candidate's potential for success in this position.

Visual documentation of recent work (20 digital images and/or up to 5 minutes of video) in PDF format or links to online content (website, Vimeo, YouTube).

A teaching portfolio of the candidate's students' work (20 digital images and/or up to 5 minutes of video), syllabi, and student evaluations for classes taught by the candidate.

An unofficial transcript showing the highest degree earned by the candidate.

Note: Finalists for the position will be required to provide an official transcript and three letters of recommendation dated within the last two years. Final candidates being interviewed are expected to make a scholarly presentation to an audience of faculty, staff and students, and to interact with students.
