OPEN CALL for light artists,
product designers and conceptual artists
Background information
Museum Romeinse Katakomben will present a light exhibition in which contemporary artists and product designers will react to a historical theme. It will be the second edition of this breathtakingly beautiful event, which will take place in the mystical underground corridors of the museum.
Life without light is unimaginable. While darkness is the symbol of evil and of the end of our existence, it’s because of light that life can emerge. Because of this, in both ancient and contemporary civilizations, many customs and events around 'light' have emerged throughout the ages.
The exhibition theme ‘Wish’ is related to one of these ancient customs: the transmitting of personal messages and wishes via light or fire. For example, in ancient Rome people gave each other so called New Year lamps. Beautiful terracotta lamps with personal messages written all over them. Museum Romeinse Katakomben will translate this phenomenon to our contemporary world.
We invite light artists, product designers and conceptual artists to exhibit a light object or installation which relate conceptually to the ancient tradition of transporting messages thought light. A small expense allowance (e.g. transportation costs) is available.
Visitors of the exhibition will also be challenged to participate: they will be invited to leave a personal wish behind. Museum Romeinse Katakomben will fulfill one of them.
How to apply
Only the following applications can be accepted:
• Your work is a (contemporary / conceptual) translation of the exhibition theme: the transmitting of messages or wishes via light or fire.
• Send a short c.v. and a PDF with photo material of your work, conceptual background information, and expenses -if applicable- to:applications@katakomben.nl subject 'WISH’.
