HANGAR International Residency Programs provide the opportunity for non-national artists to live and work in Lisbon for 1 - 3 months. The Program aims to facilitate an international dialogue between Portugal the rest of the world, encouraging the exchange of artistic practices, by providing space for the experimentation of visual arts, performance, photography, music and video. As a member of RES ARTIS, Alliance, Transartists and AIR (Art in Residence) we are committed to the promotion of multicultural art dialogue in an immersive setting. Through strategic partnerships in the international art world and institutions linked to cultural production and artistic research, alongside our involvement with The Triangle Network, HANGAR Art Research Centre runs as the perfect platform for artistic exchanges across the globe.

There are two formats to the Residency Program at HANGAR:

• Host Residencies (spontaneous application, subject to approval).
• Visiting Artists Residency (invitation and open call, subject to a jury selection).

The Residency Program at HANGAR is non-prescriptive and process-based, allowing visual artists to develop projects in response to their new environment, in order to conduct research that grows from Lisbon‘s resources. The Residency Program is firmly established in the Lisbon arts scene, promoting diverse cultures and practices through international and experimental projects. Artists are expected to partake in artist talks, workshops and open studio events at the gallery. This is a valuable opportunity for artists to promote and raise awareness about their work, as it grants the chance to create a dialogue with diverse audiences that attend the events, thus raising their artist profile.

HANGAR has 7 studio-rooms of varying sizes and differing facilities. Three of the studios are
run on a co-working format with a private room and a shared kitchen and bathroom. The other
four studio-rooms have private bathrooms and kitchenettes. All residing artists have access
to a shared photography laboratory, studios and library. Euroatla, a self-contained studio located near HANGAR, is also part of the residency program.

Residents are expected to fund their own expenses as HANGAR is unable to cover the cost of
rent or provide other forms of financial aid covering living expenses, materials used to produce
artworks or travel costs. We therefore only work with artists that can organize their own funds or
have received grants to cover their residency.
