Description of residency
Dancers, choreographers, theatre-makers and others working working with dance through approaches to environmental and cultural awareness are encouraged to apply to DANCE AIR, a new artist in residence programme, taking place in the heart of the medina in Sefrou, Morocco. The definition of dance is extensive.
With a focus on the poetic body, AiR Sefrou will provide artists with the support to develop choreography and to manifest visions into action. We offer time to incubate creativity in this wintry month while engaging with traditional forms of Moroccan dance/ceremony and local treatments to warm the body.
DANCE AIR is a rare opportunity for artists to extend their notions of dance by an intercultural exchange with a rural community rich in Arab, Amazigh and Jewish history. We are in support of contemporary projects that need time for research, experimentation and collaboration alongside bridging towards the abundance of tradition in the area. Artists are encouraged to be self sufficient and open to working in non-conventional spaces.
Who we are
Culture Vultures Arts Organisation and AiR Sefrou (Artist In Residence programme) connects people locally, regionally and nationally with an enriching experience in Northern Morocco. The residency programme has been running for four year with a staff versed in both arts and local knowledge. We orientate artists to immerse themselves in the landscape as well as lifting opportunity for presentation of new work.
The location
Sefrou is a small Moroccan town with an energetic market that serves the rural region. Amazigh culture merges with Arabic and Jewish heritage bringing crafts, traditional dance and a multitude influences to the table. It is an ideal concoction for anthropological and sociological studies. The town sits 30 minutes outside of the enchanted city of Fez. This distance grants access into an urban terrain with internationally acclaimed cultural festivals and institutions of contemporary discourse.
