Join SDA when we return to Portland, Oregon for the biennial conference centered on creativity and our 40th Anniversary.


Regular registration is $390 (includes Saturday lunch and appetizer reception)


Student registration is $200 (includes Saturday lunch and appetizer reception)

Friday’s “Concept + Context Day” events will take place at Portland State University, with presentations by speakers by Josh Faught (keynote), Shelley Socolofsky (sponsored by the American Tapestry Alliance), Aaron McIntosh, and Patricia Courtney Gold. Also included are panel discussions Crossing Generations moderated by Jane Sauer, and Fashion & Technology Panel. Selected SDA members will present work in 20x20x40, a PechaKucha-like event. Friday will end with Jane Lackey’s public keynote lecture, The Substance of Marks, sponsored by the American Craft Council. 


Saturday will be “Concept + Practice Day” at Oregon College of Art and Craft, with concurrent demos and presentations throughout the day in areas such as OCAC’s Fab Lab and jacquard weaving studios, Susan Stover, Wildcraft Studio School, Jorie Johnson, and Jeana Eve Klein. Additional presentations include Adrienne Sloane, Mary Babcock, Gretchen Morrissey, Kiranada Sterling Benjamin, The Power of Eight Artist Group, Jo Hamilton, Ja Young Hwang and Amy Lund.  Friday will end with a reception for Crossing Generations at OCAC’s Hoffman Gallery. 


The Conference concludes with Awards and final keynote address by Aram Han Sifuentes on Sunday morning. 40th Anniversary Commemorations will take place throughout the conference.


Several concurrent events and exhibits will also take place. They include Crossing Generations: Past, Present, Future, an invitational 40th Anniversary exhibit at OCAC’s Hoffman Gallery, curated by Jane Sauer, as well as A Space to Enter, works by Jane Lackey in Autzen Gallery, PSU.  In addition, SDA will feature Future Tense, an exhibition of student work in the MK +AB Gallery at PSU, and Small Works: SDA at 40 members’ exhibit at OCAC. A pop-up trunk show and sale of members’ works will take place on Thursday afternoon at PSU.


Special events for students include a breakout session with Sheila Pepe, mentoring and networking, scholarship assistance, 10x20 Students Making Our Mark student presentation, Future Tense student exhibition, and discounted student registration rates and economical dormitory accommodations.


Planned as a more intimate experience allowing plenty of networking opportunities, attendees must be SDA members. Student memberships are available. Housing is available to conferees through the University Place Hotel & Conference Center, as well as in Portland State University dormitories. Conference registration fees are $390 for regular attendees, $200 for students.
