PRAKSIS and http://norskkuratorforening.no/">Norsk Kuratorforening (The Norwegian Association of Curators) are pleased to invite curator and writer, http://nmllorens.website/">Natasha Marie Llorens (US) to develop Residency No. 8 to be held from 1 November - 29 November 2017.
This residency will take the form of a masterclass with a horizontal structure, with all participants contributing and gaining from each other. Over the course of the month, Llorens and the residency group will examine the curator’s role in facilitating social practice in contemporary art, foregrounding the ethical questions of their involvement. Research and discussion will start out from Llorens’s recent critique of Claire Bishop’s 2012 book Artificial Hells. Published in Contemporary Art Stavanger’s online journal earlier this year, Llorens’s text defines social practice art as an art form that produces events and situations that are out of artists’ and curators’ control, and asks how the idea of responsibility applies in such cases. During the residency, she and the residents will explore ways that social practice might focus more on the ambivalent meanings of relations between people, and less on the authored gesture. How might this be achieved? What new kinds of curatorial practice might support it? And would such practices shape the work of independent curators differently from the activities of institutional curatorship?
ABOUT NATASHA MARIE LLORENS //
Natasha Marie Llorens is an independent curator and writer based in Marseille and New York. Recent curatorial projects include “We the Watchers are Also Bodies,” at Hercules Art Studio Program in Manhattan, "The Exposed Suture" in Marseille, and "Mine are True Love Stories...." at the Skowhegan offices in New York. Llorens has held curatorial residencies at Marra Tein in Beirut and at Triangle Arts Association in New York, and is currently the 2017 Entrée Principale curatorial resident at Rond Point Projects in Marseille, France. Her writing has appeared in ArtReview, Modern Painters, BOMB Magazine, Pastelegram, WdW Review, Contemporary Art Stavanger, Ibraaz, and elsewhere. Institutions taught at include Columbia University and the Cooper Union in New York City, and the Curatorial Studies MA program at Parsons in Paris. She is currently developing a PhD at Columbia University, focused on the representation of war in Algerian national cinema between 1965 and 1979.
ABOUT NORSK KURATORFORENING //
The Norwegian Association of Curators works to enhance the understanding of curatorial practice in Norway and to promote the legal and economic conditions of its members vis-à-vis public policymakers and cultural institutions. To this end, the Association initiates professional forums for discussions around contemporary curatorial practices, seeks to document the history of the profession, and contributes to discourses relevant to the field. POTENTIAL RESIDENTS //
PRAKSIS is seeking to assemble a close residency community of approximately 5-8 creative people working on individual projects, who also wish to participate actively in discussion and creative exchange. The selection emphasis will be towards (a) curators working with social practice and (b) other practioners or researchers with a specific interest in the themes and ideas.
This residency is multidisciplinary: applications are welcomed from anyone with relevant experience and interests. PRAKSIS aims to provide an environment for development and professional growth: applications are welcome from practitioners of differing ages and experience levels.

WHAT PRAKSIS PROVIDES //
This residency offers comfortable accommodation for non-Oslo based residents in central Oslo. Local residents will continue to live at their usual address. The residency community will come together regularly at the residency studio space, and at organised events and meals.
Weekly meals will bring the residency community together for discussion, debate and friendship. On weekdays PRAKSIS will provide lunch. Dinners for all residents will be held weekly with invited guests.
Oslo has a vibrant and adventurous arts landscape. PRAKSIS will provide residents with information and links to the city’s art scene, informing them about exhibitions, talks, performances and other events. PRAKSIS seeks wherever possible to connect participants with relevant organisations and individuals in Oslo. PRAKSIS residencies aim to introduce the residency community to Oslo creatives in various spheres, including curators, writers, artists, and musicians.
Activity and events
The group will be expected to come together at least three afternoons a week for focused peer-to-peer research. At the start of the residency, participants will be invited to make a presentation, informally introducing themselves and their practice to the rest of the group. Other activities include a tour of Oslo's galleries, networking events, discussions and critical reading groups – some open to the public.
While the residency is free and offers accommodation and meals, PRAKSIS regrets that at this stage we cannot yet offer transport costs or a fee. However our team is happy to advise on and support applications for external grants wherever possible.
REQUIREMENTS // English is the common language at PRAKSIS and residents must be sufficiently fluent to participate in group discussion and activity. Residents are expected to involve themselves fully in the work of the residency: joining meals, participating in events and engaging with the resident community. Accepting a residency involves a commitment to participation for the full residency term.
