One Canadian artist will receive a month residency plus a $1,000 bursary.

Description of residency program
So many artists are trying to fit their practice into the hours outside of their day job. Many are setting up "studios" on their living room floors or dining room tables. At Spark Box Studio we offer artists time and space to focus on their work in an encouraging and supportive environment.

Alvin Ailey once said that the creative process is with you, all the time. The same could be said of memories of those we've lost. Fitting, then, to honour a great friend and artist through an annual bursary that will allow a new generation of creators the time and space they need to work on their craft.

In March 2015, Donald Dawson, a sculptor and painter in Prince Edward County, passed away. He wasn't survived by any blood family, but left behind a found one, to whom he'd connected through his life in the arts. This found family included Chrissy Poitras and Kyle Topping, founders of Spark Box Studio. In collaboration with Poitras's parents, Doreen Poitras and Dennis Poitras, Spark Box Studio has put together a bursary in Donald's name.

The National Residency Award will allow artists living and working in Canada to spend a month at Spark Box Studio focusing on their art—a rare opportunity at a time when grants are dwindling and the forces encroaching on our space to create are stronger than ever
The creative process is always with you, and like a memory, it lingers in the legacy of your work. With the creation of the National Residency Award, Donald Dawson's creative legacy will survive him through the work of new artists benefitting from the support and encouragement of Spark Box's community of creators.

This residency opportunity is a unique way for established and emerging artists to cultivate new ideas, access a rich library of arts resources, and focus on their career.
