Lo Schermo dell’arte film festival presents the fifth edition of VISIO - European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images.
VISIO consists of an exhibition and a series of seminars and meetings dedicated to expanding the vision and themes of artists, who use moving images in their artistic practice. By promoting encounters and international mobility, VISIO has favoured the development of a wide network of institutions, artists and professionals working with moving images.
The VISIO Programme, curated by Leonardo Bigazzi, will be held in Florence, within the context of the 9th Edition of Lo schermo dell'arte Film Festival (16th - 20th November 2016). The participants will be 12 young European artists, who work with moving images; they will be selected with an open call, in collaboration with some of the most important European Art Academies, Schools and Artist Residencies. Thanks to the generous contribution of our partners there will be no participation fee.
The deadline to apply is October 3rd 2016.
After the success of the exhibition held at Palazzo Strozzi in 2015, this year one video work for each of the 12 participating artists will be selected for a new exhibition project: VISIO. Outside The Black Box (16th Nov – 20th Nov, 2016). The exhibition will take place at the Cinema Teatro La Compagnia in Florence. The building, converted in 1987 into a theatre by Adolfo Natalini, founder of the famous radical architecture firm Superstudio in the late 1960s, will soon re-open as a cinema dedicated to documentary and art-house films. Questioning traditional film formats, the selected works will be displayed in the hidden spaces of the former theatre that usually are not accessible to the public. The exhibition is produced and organized by Lo schermo dell'arte Film Festival in collaboration with FST-Mediateca Regionale Toscana.
Also confirmed for the second edition is the VISIO Young Talent Acquisition Prize that will be assigned to one of the participating artists and consists in the acquisition of one of his/her video works by the Seven Gravity Collection, a private Italian collection that focuses on video works by contemporary artists. Through this Prize Lo schermo dell’arte Film Festival, thanks to the partnership with the Seven Gravity Collection, aims to support young artists by promoting the practice of collecting moving images works and video installations.
VISIO is creating a significant archive by mapping a new generation of artists working with film and video and based in Europe. Over 300 visual artists have applied to participate in the first four editions of the Programme. While maintaining its original identity as a training and networking project, VISIO has now developed into a much wider exhibition and research platform that is generating new opportunities and collaborations on an international level.
As a result of the research and debate generated by the Programme over the past five years, an extensive publication will be published in the spring of 2017 by https://www.moussepublishing.com/">Mousse Publishing. The book will feature contributions by leading international curators, artists and critics and a section dedicated to all the artists that have participated in the programme.
The Festival and our partners
Lo schermo dell'arte is a project founded in Florence in 2008. The Festival is dedicated to the exploration, analysis and promotion of the links between contemporary art and cinema. Among many international artists, who have attended the Festival are Hito Steyerl, Isaac Julien, Omer Fast, Simon Starling, Alfredo Jaar, The Otolith Group, Phil Collins, Melik Ohanian, Adrian Paci, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Sarah Morris, Shirin Neshat and Runa Islam.
VISIO - European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images is promoted and organized by Lo schermo dell’arte Film Festival with the generous support of Regione Toscana, Comune di Firenze, and Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze/Osservatorio per le Arti Contemporanee.
The project is organized in collaboration with Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi e FST-Mediateca Regionale Toscana and is also supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Italy, the Institut français Firenze, the Deutsches Institut Florenz, the Seven Gravity Collection and Cecchi.
The selection of the participants is conducted in partnership with the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera (Milan), the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, Kingston University (London), De Ateliers (Amsterdam), the Pavillon Neuflize OBC research lab of the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), LE FRESNOY Studio national des arts contemporains (Tourcoing), the Piet Zwart Institute (Rotterdam), the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Amsterdam), the Royal College of Art (London), the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (Copenhagen), Viafarini (Milan), the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Universität der Künste Berlin, WIELS, Contemporary Art Centre (Bruxelles), the Zurich University of The Arts.
Structure
VISIO - European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images has a 6-part structure:
1. VISIO. Outside The Black Box: the exhibition will take place at the Cinema Teatro della Compagnia in Florence (16th – 20th November 2016) and will present a work for each of the 12 participating artists as an overview on the practice of a new generation of visual artists working with moving images in Europe.
Curated by Leonardo Bigazzi, the exhibition intends to reflect on the variety of themes and languages used by young international visual artists working with film and video, and provide an opportunity to discuss exhibition formats and audience reception of moving images works. The selection will reflect the diversity of mediums and formats in contemporary moving image practice: from analog to digital works, single-channel video and films projected on screens or played on monitors, and video installation and multichannel works.
2. Festival: the participating artists are invited to attend screenings, meetings and lectures of the Festival's official program, and are encouraged to actively participate in the discussions. The main topics will then be expanded and developed during the seminars and conversations with the curators and artists hosted by the Festival. This year’s edition will feature works by Omer Fast, Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige.
3. VISIO Young Talent Acquisition Prize: the Prize will be assigned to one of the participating artists and consists in the acquisition of one of his/her video work by the Seven Gravity Collection, a private Italian collection that focuses on video works from contemporary artists.
The Prize will be assigned by the Founding Members of the Seven Gravity Collection and the winning artist will be announced during Lo schermo dell'arte Film Festival.
4. Artists Presentation: the participating artists will be asked to introduce their work in a 15 minutes presentation at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. Here, they will have the opportunity to present the fundamental themes of their artistic practice to the other participants and to a selected audience.
5. Seminars: a series of seminars will be conducted by artists and curators who will speak about various aspects of their artistic practice and research methods with the participants. The seminars, which will last 2 hours each, will be structured in such a way as to allow also moments of discussion and sharing of experiences between the professionals and the participants. In the previous editions the seminars have been conducted by Isaac Julien, Marine Hugonnier, Philippe-Alain Michaud, Filipa Ramos, Deimantas Narkevicius, Mark Nash, Maria Lind, Alain Fleischer and Heinz Peter Schwerfel, Sibylle Kurz and Sarah Perks.
6. Conversation room: in this informal environment participants will meet every day, in 45-minutes round tables and individual encounters, artists, curators, critics, producers and directors of international institutions hosted by the Festival. Ranging from the presentation of their own portfolios to simple conversations, these moments are conceived as an occasion for encounters and exchanges that can foster the participants' professional growth and extend their networks of international contacts.
Selection:
Candidates must be visual artists who:
- work with moving images as part of their artistic practice
- are under 35 years old
- are citizens or residents of one of the 47 member countries of the European Council (for the complete list, see http://www.coe.int/en/web/portal/47-members-states)
- have a degree (M.A. or equivalent) or have had at least a solo-show in the last two years
- have an excellent knowledge of the English language

The 12 selected artists will be notified by October 17th, 2016 at the latest.
The official opening of the sessions will be at 9.30 a.m., on Tues., November 15th, and will end at 11:30 p.m. on Sun., November 20th. Participants must attend all meetings for the whole duration of the Programme.
All meetings and seminars will be in English.
The selected artists will be granted:
- Pass providing access to all parts of the Festival (screenings and lectures)
- Participation in all the Programme’s Sections
- Hotel accommodation (November 14th -20th, 7 nights)
Transportation to and/or from Florence is not included
