a-n has two Critical Writing Bursaries available for two writers to visit the John Moores Painting Prize 2016 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and each produce a piece of independent critical writing, which will be uploaded to and published on https://www.a-n.co.uk/reviews">a-n’s critical writing platform by the writer.

George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’, a statue of an assassinated politician and the act of painting are just three of the influences behind works in this year’s John Moores Painting Prize exhibition, which sees an array of painting materials used – from Plasticine to acrylic on sheets of industrial aluminium foil.

The prize, which is open to all painters in the UK, has been running since 1957. The entries have been judged anonymously by an esteemed panel of jury members, who represent an international cross-section of influential voices from the art world. The jury members are the artists Gillian Carnegie, Ansel Krut, Phoebe Unwin and Ding Yi, and the author and freelance curator Richard Davey. The exhibition also features the prizewinning works from the newer John Moores Painting Prize China, founded in 2010.

Writers should be available to visit the John Moores Painting Prize in September and to publish their review by 4 October 2016.

Who is eligible?

Visual artists, arts organisers, writers and postgraduate students based in the UK with a current https://www.a-n.co.uk/register-artist">a-n membership.
