In the 21st century, social perceptions are facilitated by our interactions with the hyperreal, with iconicism continuing to dominate the societal lens.With modes of social media increasing public access to spaces typically privatized in their experience, the collective subconscious gains an acceptance of surveillance through the mediated promotion of self as product. Social value becomes dictated by a marketed representation as a means of assertion by declaration through image.

With lifestyle as luxury driving social value through image, the product becomes the person, or icon, as sell-able object. We see this exemplified by the Kardashian® empire, wherein Kim® is the image as luxury object for ideological consumption. While oftentimes misinterpreted as Selfish™, this presentation of self is a call to power through public perception of implied status via mediation (Thank-You Kris: Mother, Manager, Facilitator). With public access to privatized spaces, to entice the social consumer with the lifestyle of the “other” in fantasy, we see the societal shift from fascination in icon to commercialized investment in icon as product. In the Kim® apps, the player simulates self as Kim®, in the desire to be Kim® in her luxury, investing time and money to mimic perceived decadence.

While accelerated through sexual exposé, Kim Kardashian® has utilized this business model of iconicism through visual language in image, creating an empire rooted in representation of self, maintaining buyers by social-media access (in surveillance) to private spaces of intimacy - we’re Keeping Up With The Kardashians®.In a Kardashian® Kall to Kapitalism, icon becomes language - the Kimoji® as a Y2Hieroglyphic©. While problematic in its Kapitalist framework, this modern mode of entrepreneurship creates a platform for discussion through modes of communication, holding power in the reclamation of the Gaze through marketing of self as image and product.
