Description of residency program
Biophilia is a residency for Canadian and international artists interested in ecology, nature and life sciences to interact with the living world. The residency will facilitate daily excursions into natural habitats for collection of materials, exploration of and production within a wide range of Canadian wilderness. Daily expeditions into forests, wildlife sanctuaries, farms and research labs will be enriched by biologists, naturalists and experts.


 


Outline:


Artist talk: We invite you to give a private artist talk to share your work with the group.


Mycology:
Hike and forage with a mushroom expert in the Gatineau forest with a pocket microscope and macro lens.


Photograph what you find through dissecting microscopes at Ottawa U


Geology:
A guided hike to a fossil be with a Paleontologist


Be charmed by the magic of looking at minerals through the petrographic microscope


Entomology:
Hike Gatineau Park with an entomologist guide who will describe the local dragonflies and other insects.


Lure moths to observe with local artist Jim des Rivieres who will give a workshop on high resolution scanning of insects.


SEM:
Image samples with the Scanning Electrom Microscope at Ottawa U and the Museum of Nature.


Visit the Andrew Pelling Lab at the Center for Interdisciplinary Nanophysics to learn about biophysical manipulation.


 


Explore The Wild Garden and collect wild yeast.


 


Bacteria landscaping and slide prep workshop with Bio artist Julia Krolik.


 


Duration of residency
The residency will take place over a week in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada in the summer of 2016.


Disciplines supported and technical information
All disciplines are supported. No science experience necessary.

Accommodation
Residents will be picked up in Ottawa and driven to the Ayatana residency house, where they will have a bed and bedding and will be driven to all activities. Meals will be provided.

Indoor and outdoor workspace is available


Fees and support
Residency fee is $1000 USD


Expectations towards the artist
Residents are not expected to produce work during the program. Residents are expected to give a 20 minute artist talk to the group.
