http://www.grand-union.org.uk">Grand Union welcomes applications from artists based in Berlin, to spend the month of November 2015 in residence. This residency has been developed in collaboration with artist Joanne Masding.

Grand Union is a leading critically engaged contemporary visual arts gallery and purpose built studios, based in Digbeth, the heart of Birmingham's cultural quarter in the UK. Grand Union runs an ambitious and varied public programme of exhibitions, workshops and events that provide artists, curators and writers from across the globe access to our unique production and presentation spaces, so that artistic talent can thrive and develop. We place great importance upon the commissioning of new work, and supporting artists at the beginning of their careers.

Joanne Masding is a Birmingham based artist and co-founder of The Lombard Method studio and project space. Joanne is interested in developing international dialogue with artists and organisations, through organising residencies, exchanges and exhibitions.

Grand Union is situated in Birmingham (UK). We are situated in a large post industrial factory complex, sharing a building with: graphic design studios, woodworking studios, a ballet school, an aerial dance company, steel manufacturers and other artist studio groups.




Grand Union studios are equipped with the following:


-Wireless internet connection


-Separate working area for each artist with a large worktable, stools, power sockets and shelving


-Reference material (with study area)


-Common area for breaks (microwave oven, kettle, fridge)


-Materials and equipment: projector, scanner, LCD screens, DVD players, drill, basic tool set (hammers, screwdrivers etc), extension cables.




ACCOMMODATION


Grand Union is a not for profit organisation, and will offer a shared apartment for the duration of the residency.




What you will receive:


- 1 month dedicated studio time in Grand Union to develop your research and practice


- Arranged meetings and network building within Birmingham


- Return travel from Berlin to Birmingham


- Accommodation in Birmingham


- Artist’s fee £850


- Materials for artistic production £250





Grand Union will offer:


- One public presentation of the artist’s work


- Online and local promotion of any public events


- The opportunity for the artist to propose extra public events or workshops, where applicable




Application guidelines:


This call is open to artists based in Berlin.




Applicants are required to submit:


- A description of intent for the residency (500 words)


- A biography (250 words)


- 10 images of recent work


- A statement about your practice (500 words)
