Our Western-centric globalized economy exploits, Others, and oppresses. We are too controlled by capital and commodities to effectively create visible and scalable change to this plight, which causes the greatest financial inequality we have ever seen, harm to the environment as we kill off entire species, and even harm to ourselves as we persist on the same path without diversification. In our contemporary moment, we continue to see racism, homophobism, sexism, and ableism to a degree of violence that is unprecedented.

In the face of this moment the Subversive intellectuals Collective was formed to develop, discuss, and experiment with new ideas and old reforms as an outlet to produce positive and progressive change in the world. The transitive verb, subvert, derives from Latin in subvertere– to turn from below. The colloquial definition is to undermine the power and authority of (an established system or institution). We believe theoretical writing is a necessity in order to accomplish this turn from below. Yet, subversiveness can be lost in translation while trying to bring theory to life as a tangible and positive turn for our present and future.

Is writing subversive enough?          Can subversiveness fail you?

Thinking about being subversive: where or when do you fail, or are confronted by bipartisan, capitalistic, or hegemonic views that encumber one’s cultural, political, or social progressiveness? Do you come up against this kind of division in your subversive praxis? What causes you to pause in a process (artistic and/or theoretical that produces radical or different thinking) for fear of push-back from dominant voices? Speaking specifically to your work, where is the disconnect between what you are experimenting with theoretically and how one lives out their daily life?

Subversive intellectuals Collective is
SEEKING PAPERS
for our Inaugural Year of Guest Writers

In addition to ideas of failure within praxis or divisions between theoretical subversiveness and applicability, paper submissions may want to address, but are not limited to the following topical questions:

What injustice(s) do you confront in or with your work?

What division or dualism do you find in your subversive struggle for

cultural, political, or social justice?

Where does your theoretical thinking fail when it comes to bringing it to life?

Do you find yourself seeking blame rather than a solution?

Do you find yourself seeking assimilation rather than diversity?

Have you successfully navigated bipartisan views in order to bring your

subversive practice to life?

Is your work producing change, on what scale, and how do you envision the future?
