Are you an artist working in the digital realm? Do you want your art seen by thousands of people? Laboratory is looking to build a small collection of digital artwork suitable for public display. If selected, your work will become part of a bigger project where artwork is installed in vacant storefronts throughout Spokane for various amounts of time.

Selected artists will receive a $200 stipend.

Deadline: for submissions is Saturday, April 4th, 2015 at midnight.

Overview

Laboratory provides space and support for digital interactive art in Spokane, Washington. We’re interested in work that creates experiences, where the viewer is an integral part of their own experience, where they can touch, manipulate, and interact with the stuff they’re seeing. We want people to feel that art is something that they’re a part of.

For this particular project, we will be working with Window Dressing, a storefront gallery program that celebrates Spokane’s art and artists by filling vacant buildings and unused spaces with short-term exhibits and pop-up events.

Artwork Requirements

We’re seeking work that embraces the nature of the digital medium. Artwork where a digital process is integral to the piece, in whatever form. Appropriate work includes (but is not limited to) digitally-created images, digital collage, GIFs, video, generative/algorithmic art, and interactive digital art involving simple hardware (webcams, kinect, etc).

Sound is not an option.

Artwork must be appropriate for all audiences.

Work must be sized at a resolution of 1920x1280 or larger.

How to Apply

Applications may be sent to chatham@laboratoryspokane.com. Please include your CV, an explanation of the piece and/or artist statement, and digital images/links to the piece you’re submitting.

Selection Process

This is a juried call and your work will be reviewed by a panel of local artists, curators, and business owners. *Notifications will be emailed by Friday, May 1st, 2015. Jury decisions are final, and accepted works must be delivered within 2 weeks of notification. Stipends will be paid upon receipt of selected work.

*You will receive a notification email whether your piece is selected or not. If selected, further delivery instructions will follow.

Contract Agreement

If selected, you will be asked to sign a written agreement. In exchange for a $200 stipend, we acquire the artwork for our permanent collection, including any relevant source code (so that we have flexibility in modifying things like resolution, aspect ratio, etc.). The contract will include a perpetual, nonexclusive, fully transferrable license to use, modify, and publicly display your work with no restrictions.

You retain rights to your artwork. You can use, show, sell, or do anything with your piece as you see fit, but Laboratory will have a copy of your work that it can show, modify at any time as well. Essentially, you’ll be giving us a ‘print’ of your artwork.

Notes on Installation

We’re developing our collection to be nimble and we want work that is applicable to as many settings as possible.

There is no guarantee if and when we’ll show your work.

Given the nature of our project, your artwork may pop up unexpectedly. We’ll do our best to give you as much advance notice as we can, but sometimes we get spaces rather suddenly and will fill them accordingly. If we choose to display your artwork, we’ll promote it through our media channels. Be sure to like us on facebook and check our website regularly for our most current installations.
