Crossing Art Gallery is seeking submissions for “The View Over Here,” an international juried exhibition which will be on view from November 14 to December 13, 2014.

The exhibition seeks to view aesthetic expression through an international lens, highlighting the interactions of nationalities, and expounding upon the use of art as a way of expressing one’s origins. A portion of the funds raised at the event, including a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of artwork during the opening reception will go toward the Queens Library: The International Commons (QLIC).  This new borough-wide initiative will expand the Library’s award winning programs and services for new Americans and promote cultural activities that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of all Queens residents. Crossing Art and the Queens Library both believe that art can serve as a cultural unifier, and that building upon this common ground can heal wounded or distant relationships, and also promote new affiliations and stronger communities.

How does a culture create a space for understanding and growth? Does this space exist simply in terms of physical places set aside for mutual celebration, or does it also exist within the mind or perhaps even, as a mood? These are questions that Crossing Art and the Queens Library hope to address throughout the course of this exhibition. We are looking for national and international artists to submit artworks that explore contemporary meanings of identity in our ever-changing global landscape. Works submitted should have the power to influence and to inspire viewers to better understand both individual and collective experiences with diversity and immigration. Themes can range from the emergence and preservation of ethnic communities to conversations about post-colonial geopolitics, forming identities in a new and foreign environment, looking beyond geographical alignments, and the challenges and success of embracing cultural differences.

All creative persons are invited to submit any artwork or proposal that evokes the themes and concepts listed above. All media is acceptable including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, performance, installation, video and sculpture. Each juror will pick a favorite work from those selected from the exhibition, and the winners will be prominently featured during the next annual Queens Library Foundation Gala, to be held at the Queens Museum in Queens, NY.

The Jurors:

John Hatfield, Executive Director, Socrates Sculpture Park

Larissa Harris, Curator, Queens Museum

Catherine Lee, Managing Director, F & T Group
