The Ayatana Artist Research Program is hosting a series of residencies in Ottawa this fall.  We have one space available in Biophilia, a program for artists interested biology and wildlife that will run from Sept 28 – Oct 4th.  At the moment the residency is filled with amazing international artists,  but one of them was unable to secure a visa to visit canada so a last minute placement is available. We are looking for a local artist to fill this space.

The week long program is designed for artists to meet scientists and experts who will lead them through expeditions in the field, lab and farm while supporting preliminary brainstorming and experimentation. The week is packed with exciting workshops intended to facilitate collaboration between international artists and local scientists.

The program costs $1200 and includes:
Accommodation at the Birch and Pine Ranch and most meals for 7 days

Ground travel to all activities

A mushroom foray with a mycological expert

Introduction to DIY biology lab sterile technique and cultivation of bioluminescent fungi
A tour of gatineau park with a botanist

A day with a herpetologist to discover the frogs, snakes, salamanders and turtles in the area
A visit to the Andrew Pelling Research Biology Laboratory to learn about transgenics
A workshop on Kirlian photography

A visit to the Wild Bird Sanctuary
A visit to a large bird farm with ostrich, emu and peacocks

A visit to Carleton University's Butterfly show
Opportunity to contribute to the Ayatana catalogue
Networking and brainstorming with international artists and the possibility of a group show somewhere in the world.

No previous biology experience is necessary, but participants must apply with CV, artist statement and examples of their work.
