Exhibition Description: In the 2011documentary Brooklyn Boheme, famed director Spike Lee describes the move of affluent, white people to Fort Greene, Brooklyn as part of the “Christopher Columbus Syndrome.” In that statement he diagnosed those people with the delusion that they are discovering a place so fresh and new as if it has never been seen before. When in fact they have just landed in a neighborhood that has thrived for years without their knowledge. When you are old enough to remember something how it once was, then you have experienced cultural change. What does it mean to a city when it’s identity is changed without the city itself changing? And furthermore what does is mean when that city does manage to keep up with its new appearance and transform to a new place?

Born and Razed will bring together works from artist 25 years and younger who’ve reacted to change in their home cities from the perspective of a local. As young people of color in urban places, we see change often happen around us instead of to us or for us. How is this documented in art of those living amidst these environments?

Born and Razed celebrates the value of youth and DCAC’s 25th anniversary.
