EXPERIMENTAL ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCY TEMPORARY ART COMMUNITY

DE LICEIRAS 18 is an experimental, independent project located in a residential house in Porto, Portugal recently transformed into an art space.
We seek for visual artists, designers, conceptual gardeners, experimental writers, sound hunters, performers, philosophers and (...). Ones who are enthusiastic about staying for one month or longer within an exchange based micro-art-community, learn, teach, discuss and break any preconceptions. Who are not afraid to extent barriers between private and public, live and create in the same space. Who are able to take inspiration from both possibilities and impossibilites, obstacles and miracles which creating in such an informal, experimental, no-budget and no-white-box space brings. Ones who will create an elaborated or spontaneous site-specific projects.
There are always 4 to 6 artists in the house and the cat.
SPACE
The DE LICEIRAS 18 is located in a very old, two-story house in Porto, Portugal which seems to organically adapt to the form of the city itself, consisting of no perpendicular lines, with floors sloping and sounds of human and seagulls daily life entering through wooden old windows creating in the interior a constant quasimusical blend of noises. The house is situated in a very particular place, although right in the middle of a triangle created by three most central metro stations: Trindade, Aliados and Bolhão, its entrance stays hidden in a tiny bystreet, overlooked by tourists and bustling with local life. The everyday reality of the bystreet is even more curious due to a very particular combination of the house neighbors, formed by an old shoemaker's workshop, a motorcycle club and a traditional bar. The kitchen and upper toilet of the house face a brothel.
The aim is to connect with the immediate environment of the house and explore borders between private and public by living, creating and exhibiting in one and the same space. The project is addressed to artists from all disciplines who want to spend a month or more, take a part in the transformation within a temporary interdisciplinary art collective and realize a site-specific project in the house.
You will stay in a private room that you can also use as a studio and exhibition space. You can also create and install your work in any other place within the house, including bathrooms, kitchen and corridors and use the silkscreen workshop. During the process we will collectively decide on the form and exact dates of presenting projects created within the residency.
During your stay you will be assisted with working and personal needs and introduced to local society, cultural life of Porto and other art projects.
THE HOUSE FACILITIES

We have a little garden in the Musas community gardens that you are also welcome to use as a studio or a venue for your project.
Portuguese houses generally do not have heating system - and so does not ours. Therefore it may get quite cold in the winter. We usually deal with it just wearing very warm clothes indoor and carrying hot water bottles around but on a special request we may arrange a heater.
IMPORTANT: All the resident artists are expected to equally participate in maintaining the house clean and participate in household works.
COSTS
The project has non-profit character and is artist-run and self-funded. Each participant will pay the monthly contribution of 230 euro which includes the rent, electricity, gas, water, internet, toilet paper, utensils, eco-friendly cleaning detergents, clean sheets and laundry twice per month. You will need to cover your own trip to Porto, food and materials. In case you come as a couple / friends / collective and share the same room the cost per person is 170 euro. There are opportunities of organizing fund-rising events or some cost reduction in exchange for community works.
The latest one month before coming you need to transfer via PayPal 50 euro deposit to secure your residency place. The deposit will be fully refunded on the day your residency is finished, provided you left the space and equipment tidy and complete and respected the house rules.
There is no application fee.
