x marks the spot | a group show about variables for EAST 2014

Exhibition Dates October 25 – November 23, 2014

APPLICATIONS DUE SEPTEMBER 7, 2014 11:59 pm CST

Quantitative or categorical, discrete or continuous, dependent or independent, variables allow scientists to measure and describe properties of the world around us. They may take on a wide range of values, be easy or difficult to estimate, and are common to every scientific discipline.

Art.Science.Gallery. is seeking submissions of artworks for a group exhibition about scientific variables. We are interested in a wide range of interpretations of variables, their scientific meaning, and usage across the different sciences. Works may explore how variables are symbolized, but also how they function in mathematics, statistics, computer science, physical and biological sciences and all fields of scientific research. Works may depict physical variables that vary over space or time; or, works may explore the etymology or history of the scientific use of variables.  This could include famous variables like bill size in Darwin’s Finches, ubiquitous variables like precipitation amount or ambient temperature, or common symbols like x or s.  This exhibition will fulfill Art.Science.Gallery.’s missions of supporting emerging and established artists, engaging our community in the sciences through the visual arts, and providing a space for artists and scientists to forge new and collaborative relationships.

Special events during the exhibition include the EAST Austin Studio Tour, a self-guided tour of East Austin’s studios and creative spaces November 15-16 & 22-23. We consider science-art to be any work that combines art and the natural sciences through content, purpose, craft or materials. Thus, submissions may be in any medium. Special consideration will be given to works or proposals by artist-scientist pairs or small groups of artists and scientists. Pair/Group proposals will be considered as they are submitted. Individual works will also be considered.

Applicants may submit up to 3 works or proposed works for consideration. The due date for submissions is Sunday, September 7, 2014 at 11:59 pm CST and applicants will be notified of acceptance by Saturday, September 14, 2014 by 11:59 pm CST. If your work is accepted you will be responsible for delivering your work(s) to the exhibition space by Monday, October 20, 2014 in Austin, TX. Works exhibited in this show that are not sold must be picked up by Monday, November 30, 2014 in Austin, TX.
