Introduction

Alexandra Arts is an artist-led collective based in Manchester's Alexandra Park. Intertwined with an arts programme, we are setting up an International Artist Residency for an artist to explore Alexandra Park’s significant heritage connected to the iconic Suffragettes leader, Emmeline Pankhurst. Pankhurst (born Goulden,1858 –1928) was a political activist and instrumental in gaining the right for women to vote. She was born only yards from Alexandra Park in the neighbouring Moss Side Estate and locally there are no traces of her legacy.

This International Artist Residency opportunity welcomes a female artist working in any art form to be inspired by, contemporise and creatively illuminate the significant local history that is linked to Alexandra Park. The International Artist Residency places a strong emphasis on engagement and collaboration, seeking to deepen the existing relationships between Alexandra Park and the multicultural community surrounding it.

Artists eligibility

The International AiR opportunity is open to a female UK and internationally based artists.

Why female Artists only? Our educational partner St Mary's Primary School, an ethnically diverse school community based in Moss Side has invested in this International AiR opportunity (Download the brief here; http://www.alexandra-arts.org.uk/apply-here/ - see more info under section; AiR practicalities). A male artist would not be able to access some of this school’s audience due to cultural and religious reasons.

There is a £ 10.00 application submission fee, payable over PAYPAL- http://www.alexandra-arts.org.uk/apply-here/
