GENERAL INFORMATION

AKADEMIE SCHLOSS SOLITUDE

Since opening its doors in 1990, Akademie Schloss Solitude has supported approximately 1,200 young artists from more than 100 countries via its fellowship program. An institution which enjoys a formidable international reputation as a leading artist residency in Germany, the Akademie is distinguished particularly by its unique selection procedure, during which independent specialist jurors select the fellows, and its liberal project funding
tailored to fellows’ individual needs. Artists working in the fields of architecture, visual arts, performing arts, design, literature, music/sound and video/film/new media may apply for fellowships. The Akademie developed a new, interdisciplinary work forum in 2002 in the form of its art, science & business program. Since then, fellowships have also been granted in the fields of humanities, social sciences, and economy/economics. In 2014, the discipline of culture & law (with a special focus on authorship) has been included (instead of chess in 2010 and 2012).

GUIDING PRINCIPLE

As a foundation under public law, Akademie Schloss Solitude, which is funded by grants from the state of Baden-Württemberg, undertakes to “promote art and artists, with particular emphasis on young, uniquely talented artists, and to create an interaction with the national and international public via its events. Furthermore, the Akademie promotes a dialog between art, science and economics via the allocation of fellowships and interdisciplinary projects” (Foundation charter, § 2).

The name “Akademie Schloss Solitude” unites the belief in artistic, scientific exchange with the notion of a refuge, a credo which underlay the construction of the Schloss Solitude from the very beginning.  The focus is on research and creativity as opposed to production and presentation. Despite this, the Akademie hosts up to 100 public events each year. Introducing new ideas and projects to the public can constitute an important and enriching aspect of the artists’ residencies.  The “Solitude model” has been conceived to grant each fellow as much freedom as possible. In this way, the available resources can be used in an optimal, needs-oriented manner.

The Akademie stipulates focal themes within the context of its art, science & business program, which are designed to include not only fellows from all disciplines, but external specialists too. The Akademie views art, science and business as complementary rather than separate activities, which interact dynamically and encourage mutual productivity. The interaction between individuals of different backgrounds and the interdisciplinary transfer of knowledge and experience are sources of creative, ingenious and management-based synergies.

Residencies at Akademie Schloss Solitude enable fellows to devote themselves to their research projects under favorable material and intellectual conditions, free of daily pressures and productive deadlines. These periods should also be understood as a future investment, as they sometimes only bear fruit for both the fellow and the institution at a later date.

FOCAL THEME

At the beginning of a new application round, the Akademie stipulates a new central topic within the context of its art, science & business program which is designed to include not only fellows from all disciplines, but external specialists too. The Akademie views art, science and business as complementary rather than separate activities, which interact dynamically and encourage mutual productivity. To this end, fellows are selected in the fields of art, science & business, internal and public events are organized and publications are released. All fellows – artists, scientists and economists – are free to participate in projects related to the central topic.

Following a suggestion by the current jury chairman, Kaiwan Mehta, the Akademie will be organizing its art, science & business program around the central topic »Biography and the Production of Space«. With this central topic, the Akademie would like to initiate a comprehensive interdisciplinary discussion about the production of spaces – which can be physical, virtual or imaginary– as an individual as well as social phenomena with
implications in economy, art, literature, and sciences.

ACTIVITIES

The eclectic event program organized by Akademie Schloss Solitude each year is designed solely by the Akademie’s fellows and guests. In addition to trials of new presentation formats, internal and public events including concerts, readings, exhibitions, theatrical productions, film screenings, symposia, workshops and podium discussions are held. Details of these can be found on the Akademie’s website, which also features a data base listing all previous fellows and events.

German and foreign-language publications concerning fellows’ working results in the form of catalogs, art books, literary works, scientific collected editions and digital musical and video media are published annually within the context of the merz&solitude publisher collaboration.
