Industry of the Ordinary Summer School, 2014
MANA Contemporary, Chicago
2233 S. Throop St., 5th Fl., Chicago, Illinois 60608
11-29 August 2014

Located at the Industry of the Ordinary (IOTO) studio and Project Space at MANA Contemporary in Pilsen in Chicago, the IOTO Summer School will engage in a variety of activities centered on the creative practice of the individual artist-residents. In keeping with IOTO’s catholic interests, a variety of contemporary art-making strategies in a range of media will be presented during the first group sessions, often using IOTO’s manifold creative approaches as the starting point of examination. This 3 week, intensive immersion into contemporary art-making practice will be tailored to the interests of the twelve residents in an informal, but professional atmosphere.

After an initial immersion period, students will work on their own projects, meeting regularly with IOTO to facilitate these endeavors.  Meetings with IOTO will be typically face-to-face discussions at a location of the student’s choice. Online, remote discussions will also be encouraged as well as on-line group forums. At the beginning, middle and end of the session, the group will meet to broaden this discussion. Other activities will include a focus on professional development and consideration of exhibition strategies.

The IOTOSS Residency will culminate in a group show at Mana that will be open to the public.

The Industry of the Ordinary Summer School will admit 12 students at a nominal cost of $500 per student. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The school is also available to remotely-based artists for a reduced rate.
