The Clipperton Project Creative Residencies

Artists working in all mediums are invited to join The Clipperton Project expeditions. The expeditions take place on sailing boats which travel all around the world to coastal and remote locations; expeditions are currently taking place in Catalonia, Guatemala, Uruguay and are due to take place shortly in South Georgia, The Northern Isles of Scotland and Mexico to name a few.

Artists will reside on sailing boats alongside their crews and other TCP participants; scientists, writers, environmental activists and people of general interest in the project and it's goals. The boat is a floating laboratory where collaborations are formed and dialogues begin.

TCP seeks creative practitioners with a spirit for adventure, a love of their environment and a passion for learning.  Residencies can be for one week or multiples there of, depending on the length of the expedition which can be anything from one week to six months.

Particulars

Artists are provided with accommodation on the boat as well as food throughout the journey.

Materials are not provided.

Space on the boat is generally very limited, there is no space to make large scale works whilst sailing but when ported studio space might be available depending on the location.

Everyone residing on the boat forms the crew, while some experienced crew members take care of the boat and the journey alongside the captain TCP participants are required to take shifts at the helm (no previous experience required).

Costs

An on board fee is required to cover subsistence costs, this varies according to location and length of stay but is around £200/week.

Artists will pay for their own travel to and from the boat.

Application is free.

Exhibitions and workshops

TCP works alongside communities visited during the journeys and offers outreach activities to all age groups; art and science workshops, presentations, talks, film screenings etc.  Participants are encouraged to work alongside the TCP core team in delivering and developing these activities giving artists the opportunity to gain skills these areas.

Exhibitions are arranged where possible for artists to exhibit work developed during the residencies.  Exhibited works should complement the goals of TCP (exploration, environmental responsibility and sustainability), however artists taking part in expeditions need not have prior experience in working alongside environmental issues nor the intention to make environmentally focused work while aboard the vessel.  In short the project is open to all creative practitioners with open minds and a spirit to explore and respect the earth.
