Founded in 1972, A.I.R. Gallery is the first artist-run, not-for-profit contemporary art gallery for women artists in the country. As an early alternative space, A.I.R. served as a catalyst for the women’s art movement and a model for other artists and arts organizations. A s art critic Holland Cotter recently wrote in theNew York Times, “Most of the interesting American artists of of the last 10 years are as interesting as they are in part because of the feminist art movement of the early 1970s. It changed everything... what art in the next 30 years will look like i don’t know, but feminist influences will be at its source.” Building on A.i.R.’s historical influence on contemporary art, the Fellowship Program provides visible gallery space and an opportunity to establish relationships with experienced artists, art professionals and collectors. A panel of outside reviewers will select participants. Fellowship recipients will be assigned New York member liaisons and panelists are encouraged to visit the individual Fellow’s studios in preparation for their solo shows. In addition, recipients will plan and implement a community project with the gallery during their tenure.
The 2014-2015 Fellowship Panelists are:
Piper Marshall: Assistant Curator, Swiss Institute/Contemporary Art
Leeza Ahmady: Director, Asian Contemporary Art Week/Asia Society & ACAC Initiative
Claire Gilman: Curator, The Drawing Center
Selected artists will be notified by March 15, 2014, and the program will begin when the gallery opens in the fall.

Eligibility Requirements - the program is open to all self-identified women artists who:
-Live in the NY C greater metro area or plan to live in the NYC greater metro area for the duration of the program;
-Have never had a solo show or have not had a solo show in the last ten years outside of an educational or not-for-profit venue (Note: MFA or senior thesis exhibitions and participation in invitational solo exhibitions in not-for-profit spaces do not make an artist ineligible);
-Have not been members of A.I.R.Gallery or received the A.I.R.Gallery Fellowship previously;
-Are residents of the United States or have a valid visa not expiring before the end of the program, are 18 years of age or older, and will not be enrolled in a degree program during the 18 months of sponsored fellowship.

Artists accepted to the program receive the following benefits:
1. Sponsored membership inA.I.R. Gallery from September 1, 2014 to June 21, 2015;
2. A solo exhibition in the Fellowship Gallery during the Fellowship;
3. Printing of exhibition announcement cards;
4. Participation in membership-based exhibitions;
5. A ccess to the gallery space, resources and career development assistance during program tenure;
6. One-on-one studio visit with panelist;
7. A.I.R Gallery artist-member as liaison.
Artists accepted to the program are expected to meet the following commitments to A.I.R. :
1. Plan one community project with the gallery during program participation (Note: Some examples of community projects are film screenings, panel discussions, improvements to the gallery website, representing the gallery at outside conferences and events. 2. Attend regularly scheduled Fellowship meetings to be held at A.I.R. Gallery;
3. Give a short (10-15 minute) artist talk at solo show opening reception.

Application Process - Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m., FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2013

2. 5 images OR one 3-minute video (see image guidelines below);
3. Resume;
4. There is NO application fee.
Application Review The A.I.R. Staff initially reviews fellowship applications to ascertain whether the applicant meets the requirements of the fellowship program, as stated in the application form. The selection panel will then conduct a blind review of applications in January 2014. The selection panel will review and rank all applicants based on the following criteria:
• Skill and use of materials
• Ambition shown in the execution of the work
• Complexity of meanings beyond "one-liners" or singular readings of the work
• Subverting visual clichés
• Visions shown from a verity of perspectives; political, social and art historical
• Skills displayed through command of the materials
• Presentations that indicate effort and commitment to the profession
• Commitment to and quality of artwork presented; tightly focused projects demonstrating intellectual rigor and innovative approaches to materials and concepts
• Community project idea, as proposed in the application
• Potential to maximize the unique opportunities presented by the A.I.R. Fellowship, including its important 40 year history as a collective for women in the arts
