DIVE-IN is the result of a collective reflection on the ways of showing video art. It is about experimenting with a video program in an industrial or commercial area, and creating a space for an unusual meeting between the audience and video art. Our project explores the concept of drive-in theaters which appeared in the 30s in the United States, while adapting to the different uses of the car today.

To dive refers to the underwater world, the immersion, or the act of jumping from one element to another, headlong and arms forward. It’s a way to get out of our comfort zone and into a different environment. In French, dive also means to sink, to flow. To dive can, as well, be used to indicate when an airplane is pitched nose down, whether intentionally or accidentally. As well, note that dive is a word that is used in English to refer to a dilapidated bar, a neighbourhood place where local people gather to drink and socialize.

Our project is profoundly integrated in a contemporary context, it explores the possibilities of an event in the suburban area of Geneva, Switzerland. This particular location proposes a reflection on our uses of outer-urban spaces in this region. By borrowing a deserted parking lot at night, we will redefine a company or an industrial parking building as a space dedicated to the projection of video art. By coming to this odd and revisited drive-in theater, the public re-interpret this deserted space and create the event. Thereby, the initial use of a commercial parking lot is flipped upside-down.

Within this context, we invite you to submit videos. We will then select videos to develop two programs of about one hour.

DIVE-IN will take place on September 21st, 2013
