DEAD DROP
Location
Provincetown Ma, United States

According to Wikipedia, a dead drop is "a method of espionage craft used to pass items between two individuals using a secret location." A dead drop allows for the exchange of objects and information "while maintaining operational security" because "the operatives may or may not know one another and/or never see one another."

The curatorial project Dead Drop relies on this idea of passing critical information secretively to other, unknown operatives, but presumes that "operative" is just code for artist.

We can't tell you who we are, but we are curating Dead Drop in Provincetown, MA, USA during the Summer of 2013. The dead drop is located on the premises of an art gallery, on the main street of a beach resort town which is famous for catering to artists and the international gay community. Approximately 80,000 people will pass by the dead drop over the Summer. A smaller number will know that it is there.

We are seeking submissions in absolutely any medium meeting the following criteria:

 •    The work must deal with death, subterfuge, and/or the occult. But these can be interpreted very liberally. (For example, you do not have to talk about death in the large, gothic sense of the word. You could address the death of a habit, the death of belief, the death of a goldfish, the death of the environment, etc.)

•    Your work must be made for one person to find -- you just don't know who that person is. Assume that they need to know something very important, so you should share something very important through the piece. Maybe something you wouldn't be able to share if you were passing the information via a live drop.

•    Your work must be enclosed or enclosable within something innocuous (for example a ballpoint pen, the bottom of an ashtray, a balloon, a rubber doorstop...) that can be easily placed or installed either in the gallery building or nearby outside of it.

•    You are willing to give your work away to the "operative" who retrieves it. Dead Drop will just be passing crucial information about our deepest fears and strangest experiences on through a chain whose end we cannot know (in order to protect operational security.) You will just have to trust that your information is getting where it needs to go.

All of Dead Drop will be documented and anyone who does not want to remain anonymous can be credited after the project is completed.

Dead Drop will be in effect from July - September 2013. Applications are being accepted through the 9th of June, 2013, but earlier applications are encouraged. Application procedure: send a PDF document of no more than 3 pages which includes at least 3 images of your work (or sketches of the idea being proposed); a short description of what you would like to submit; a short bio or links to website with your bio on it; and your contact information to ampdeaddrop@gmail.com. You may also apply through WOOLOO, but the emailed PDF application is preferred.
